Priority Steps: The different stages to defend yourself against a gun

It’s like cooking – although I’m a poor cook – if you put the ingredients in the wrong order, the cake won’t hold. Well, that’s not a big deal, you’ll just have to make another one, but when you find yourself in front of a gun, you don’t have a second chance!

What does this mean? Be careful with the ingredients!

First, “the weapon must not be turned towards me”. Swinging the gun towards the attacker is fine, but if the gun is not fully turned, you are even.

However, if I strike and he moves back, the gun is pointed back at me.

Remember he has a gun, and if it’s loaded, with a bullet ready to go (he may not have fired yet), I’m still in danger.

So don’t think “I point the gun towards the attacker”, but rather “first I try to get the gun out of his hands without hitting him”. With the energy of despair, not with complacency!

And if it resists, we pull, we pull, and we shout “LET GO! LET GO!”.

If it doesn’t work, we strike! These are the ingredients in the right order. If possible!

Now if the gun is turned, you stroke and you managed to disarm him, then it was “the right technique at the right time”!

Watch out when disarming

There is a great difference between

  1. Rotate the barrel,
  2. Strike,
  3. Pull the weapon towards you

AND

  1. Rotate the barrel, strike and pull the weapon towards you, all in one movement.

Every unnecessary moment of reflection is a potential danger when fighting in the street.

The simplest move – when everything is going well, of course – is to swing the weapon at the aggressor and then, in one continuous motion, bring it back toward you.

In practice, when your partner is squeezing very hard, pull the weapon out of your side!

But let’s say you’re confronted to a lumberjack, you’re going to fight. Danger!

At least that’s my opinion. Fighting = Danger. Don’t fight!

Or rather, don’t persist! As soon as it starts fighting, be quick. For instance, throw an impact on a sensitive target, like the knee.

If you don’t react, the gun could end up in your face.

To sum up: release the gun upwards with your hands firmly gripping the barrel, dodge with your head, and pull out with your hands. If it resists, then you punch!
