Nowadays, walking alone is not always very reassuring, especially within large cities. Knowing how to defend yourself can be a very good option for yourself, but also to learn how to defend others. Even if it is obvious that becoming a black belt in karate does not guarantee you peace of mind, knowing the right moves to get out of a risky situation quickly and efficiently is always interesting.

Unfortunately, let’s be honest, self defense training is usually quite expensive in the long run. I understand that some people don’t want to join a combat sport club all year round, especially if you realize that you don’t like it. On the other hand, attending a free self defense training course is a good idea to learn some useful fighting techniques to use in case of physical aggression.

At the beginning of each sports year, many clubs offer test training. This is a great opportunity to discover the pedagogical approach of several instructors!

What’s the point of attending a free self defense training?

There are many reasons why you might be interested in self defense, but often it’s because you want to:

  • Learn simple movements to defend yourself against potential attackers,
  • To recover an acceptable shape,
  • Optimize stress management and improve self-confidence,
  • Discover combat sports and martial arts in a playful way…

Obviously, these are only a few ideas, everyone has their own reasons.

Here, the objective is not to know how to fight, but rather to acquire new reflexes that help you to face an aggression. But also, to get out of a close combat or seizures, in a minimum of time.

What will you learn during a free self defense training?

Usually, practitioners train together in a gym. An instructor accompanies them and introduces them to the discipline of self defense. You will be in condition to understand and apprehend a state of major stress while assimilating simple and effective tactics to escape from your aggressor.

Don’t expect to become a Krav Maga master or Pencak Silat expert in one or two test training sessions! But you will learn a fighting method that allows you to defend yourself in hand-to-hand combat and to dodge blows.

Which combat sport should you start with?

Self defense is too often considered as a combat sport, whereas it is rather a condensation of different practices that help to face a dangerous and real situation. During a street fight, it is obvious that a judo practitioner will not necessarily know how to react, even if he has experience in this discipline… Reaction times, stress and many other parameters are to be taken into account to be able to anticipate and react on the heat of the action.

Honestly, no matter what combat sport or martial art you practice, know that they are not meant to be used apart from the rules that govern them. For instance, Jiu Jitsu or Aikido are hardly applicable outside the tatami. Especially when you have to take hits in the face or protect yourself against an aggressor armed with a knife or a stick…
