Practicing a martial art or combat sport can be a good way to learn how to defend yourself, whether you are a fearful person or simply want to protect your family. In fact, everyone should be able to understand, anticipate, avoid and/or deal with violence, whether it’s directed at someone close to you or simply at yourself. Here’s a tip: read our article on how to deal with an aggressive person.

Did you know that violence is increasing every year? It is mainly “gratuitous” violence, that is to say, violence that does not aim to rob the victim. Another disturbing fact is that nearly 86% of women under 25 years old say they have been victims of a personal attack (physical and/or moral) or sexual assault. As you may have understood, ladies and gentlemen, it is high time to learn how to defend yourself!

What does an introduction to self defense consist of?

Anyone can be a victim of some form of aggression, whether it be verbal or physical. Attending a self defense or martial arts training allows you to discover the ideal fighting techniques to defend yourself.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Discover the right positions and adapt your behavior when faced with a suspicious or aggressive individual likely to confront you (don’t let him surprise you).
  • Learn how to use self defense weapons or any everyday object (very useful for women confronted with a bigger and/or stronger person).
  • Defend yourself against people armed with a stick or a knife,
  • Have a psychological advantage over the aggressor.
  • Overcome or control fear and stress

You will certainly have to participate in several seminars to succeed in understanding and memorizing all the self defense techniques, but this will already give you a good overview of the basics of self defense to master in case of aggression.

What are the advantages of an introduction to self defense?

In addition to everything mentioned above, an initiation will provide you, among other things, with benefits regarding your physical condition, as well as at the psychological level!

React efficiently to an assault

Being prepared to face a risky situation involves learning and developing reflexes and tactics to defend oneself against a potential dangerous individual (fist blocks and strikes, for instance). Very often, self defense involves close combat. Indeed, your attackers will tend to provoke a hand-to-hand fight, getting as close as possible to you, to scare you and take the upper hand.

The advantage of self defense is that it does not force you to practice combat sports that you do not like. That being said, if you don’t want to keep practicing krav maga, for instance, it is quite possible to practice other martial arts regulated by the French Federation, such as:

  • Jiu Jitsu,
  • Karaté,
  • Aïkido,
  • Judo,
  • Boxing (street boxing in particular),
  • Taekwondo,
  • Penchak silat…

Improve self-confidence and assertiveness

Acquiring the physical and psychological tools to destabilize an individual who wants to intimidate you can be very useful at a given moment, but also in your daily life. A better self-control allows you to gain in confidence, but also in assertiveness. Your gestures and your movements will be more confident and your determination will be more marked.

A rather effective method for all those who lack self-confidence and who want to develop this skill thanks to an initiation to self defense and street fighting in a playful and useful way, with a skilled instructor.

Take control over your stress and emotions

In the same vein, practicing martial arts is important and even necessary for those who wish to learn to control their stress and emotions. Moreover, facing the fear of physical aggression is a major asset in self defense because you will be less surprised and you will be able to keep your self-control the day you’ll be confronted with a risky situation.

Introduction to self defense: a real asset

Practically, no previous experience is required. The training is open to everyone, and is not intended to turn you into a martial arts master, but simply to teach you the right moves and techniques to defend yourself correctly in the street, at work, at home, and not just in the gym. Above all, you will learn simple and effective methods that can be applied immediately and that could save your life in certain situations. Moreover, it is also an opportunity to learn more about the law of self defense, especially regarding legitimate defense.
