In this video from the online self defense training “Martial Studies: Devastating Strikes”, get to know whether it is better to master a lot or little self defense techniques.

Little…

Some people prefer to stick to pure self defense and avoid working on too many techniques because when you are stressed, your brain is very selective, notably when it comes to select the most appropriate strike, among other things. These very few seconds of reflection are an additional risk and lower your chances of survival. Indeed, it goes without saying that you don’t have time to get confused!

It’s scientific, and these people are absolutely right!

All in all, the more different techniques you assimilate, the more your brain will have to sort out and when you are stressed out, it may falter. It’s a fact, scientific says so.

…VS a lot

Other people believe that techniques will allow them to get through it.

For instance, some Krav-Maga clubs consider that A attack necessarily calls on response B. Hence, they think that techniques become instinctive, fluid and can be executed perfectly. However, the A attack can turn into an A-bis, B-bis, C-bis or even D attack. You see what I mean?

As an instructor, I like to show other techniques that can be left out too. We don’t have to work on all techniques, there are even some that we will hardly work on, but it’s good to know that A and B are not the only options that exist!

You will never face the same situation twice

In the street as well as in training, you will never face two similar situations, so you’d better have as much cards as possible. Again, this is just my opinion.
