As parents, we sometimes worry about our children when they go out of the house. Nevertheless, it is impossible to keep a constant eye on them. But with all the events we read about in the newspaper or see on TV, it’s quite hard not to panic. But that’s not the only reason why it’s good to consider introducing self defense to children. It’s an ideal practice that helps them develop self-confidence, and teaches a sense of responsibility.

Offering your children group martial arts and self defense training sessions can be the ideal solution to reassure you, and help them become aware of the dangerous situations around them. One session a week is more than enough to learn how to react to an aggression.

Why should children attend a self defense training?

The most logical reason is to help them learn how to defend themselves. Facing a potential abuser can be very stressful and traumatic for a child. But if they know that this kind of situation can happen, and if they know how to deal with it, then they may react in a safe and proper way. The idea is not to fight, but rather to teach them the best way to defend themselves against attackers and how to escape. A few simple and effective fighting techniques are more than enough to develop reflexes in case of aggression. Don’t worry, we’re not doing violent strikes with the fists, and no close combat either!

Above all, it’s also a great sport that help them be in good physical condition. The training is educational, each one evolves at his own pace and finds his marks in complete safety. All the movements taught by the instructor help them develop their own physical and mental capacities.

Learn to master theory

You should know that a great deal of the work is theoretical, with rules and manners to respect and that can be very useful if you need to resort to self defense. Indeed, a physical aggression in the street is quite far from the security of the dojo or gym. In order to deal with it, children must be aware of the important issue of self defense. Much more than a combat sport, it is also a philosophy of life.

Learn to manage ones’ feelings

We know that children sometimes have difficulty managing their emotions and are easily overwhelmed. So, this discipline allows them to learn how to manage their stress, something they might need without being aware of it. Knowing how to defend yourself in case of physical aggression is a thing, but overcoming your fears is quite different. Even experienced practitioners say so!

Practicing a martial art is also learning to interact with others. Moreover, self defense is useful in many ways, because it boosts self-confidence, concentration, self-esteem and teaches the importance of respecting others, for instance.

How to register your children to a self defense training session?

If you would like your children to attend a private self defense training or to join the club in your city, it’s very simple, just contact the instructors and let them know you’re interested. Some clubs allow a trainee to join the children’s training during the year. If this is not the case, wait until the beginning of the school year in September to go to your city’s association forum and discover the different combat sports clubs that offer Krav maga, Pencak silat or other martial arts, such as Judo. To validate the registration, you will only have to pay the membership fee and provide a medical certificate stating that your child is able to practice self defense. Later, you will receive a license from the French federation.

You should also know that there are adult and children’s classes that allow you to spend a nice moment with your child while practicing and learning self defense gestures.
