“Kihon Ippon Kumite” is a traditional exercise where Tori (the attacker) makes a single attack on Uke (the defender) who counterattacks with one or more counterattacks. The “Traditional Evolutive” module of the Street Karate method allows you to improve thanks to more realistic traditional exercises.

How to make Kihon Ippon Kumite closer to the reality?
Let’s say the defender is on his knees. In this position of weakness, you can explore other avenues and adapt your techniques to this situation, which is not often used in traditional Karate.
A few examples of evolutive techniques
- If you are punched straight in the face (Oi tsuki Jodan), you can dodge inside, get out of the axis of attack, and hit the inside of his thigh with your forearm. You can also grab his ankle to throw him to the ground.
- When you are practicing standing, you can adopt the on guard position (rather than the traditional hip guard in Hikite) to better protect yourself in case of a sudden attack.
- Don’t hesitate to exploit your low positions in order to use them as “springs” and to bounce more easily on your partner. For instance, you can make a strike with the bony part of your middle finger (Nakadaka Ippon Ken Tsuki) on a pressure point in his inner thigh.
- Another example of improvement: you can use your partner’s body to perform certain techniques, like a jumping knee strike to the face for instance. This technique is acrobatic, but it will challenge your physical abilities and take your practice off the beaten track.
In the “Traditional Evolutive” module of the Street Karate method, your imagination has no limit, as long as you don’t lose sight of the realistic and effective side of your techniques.
