We’ve talked a lot about how dangerous knife attacks are and how difficult it is to counterattack properly in such a situation.

What about a knife attack while you are in you car?

Defend yourself against a knife attack in a car: what you shall do

Dealing with a knife attack is already extremely risky in normal circumstances, but during a car jacking, it is almost impossible task.

In today’s video, I suggest two ways to deal with a threat at your throat. The first one consists in grabbing the armed wing by shifting as much as possible (in prolongation of the point, see video), pulling the arm by using the car to hit, then pushing the attacker away.

This is a technique of last resort, if you have NO CHOICE! It is also one of the “least worst” ways to counterattack, among a series of other extremely risky or illogical counterattacks, such as pulling the arm out towards the seat – getting your throat cut in the process – or attempting a joint lock. Needless to say that in such cases, the outcome may not be glorious.

In itself, no single technique can provide a consensus, all counterattacks can be strongly criticized.

The second way consists in complying with the threat, keeping a low profile, giving the car keys and running away quickly, shooting his legs if necessary, but I would not recommend it if you managed to cooperate.

Unfortunately, there are not hundred ways to react to such a situation. Don’t forget that you are in an extremely confined space, and that the possibilities of counterattacks are almost zero.

In such unfavorable conditions, your only chance of survival is to put your ego aside and prioritize survival over equipment.

Don’t play the hero in front of a knife, think about survival first!

Protect a loved one from a knife attack

The problem is even greater when your life is not the only one at stake.

If you are already having trouble leaving your car, how do you react when someone close to you is also in danger (e.g. your child who is still on the back seat)?

What if, after you have complied and tried to negotiate an escape with your loved one, the assailant tells you “no” by attempting an extraction?

This is where the extremely risky counterattacks mentioned above become interesting despite their dangerousness. In some situation, it’s interesting to be aware of the (very limited) options you have to counterattack, typically when you are ready to put your life in danger to protect a loved one.

These will be your very last options if you are unable to ease the situation or run away…

The harsh reality

Unfortunately, you shouldn’t delude yourself about your chances of survival in case of a knife attack in a car. Your room for maneuver will be way too small, your counterattack panel will be deprived of the most decisive options.

Therefore, you should always make sure to lock the doors when you enter your car (if it does not do it automatically), park with the windows closed, and stay aware of your surroundings.

Finally, a common sense rule that can never be repeated enough: don’t provoke conflict by beeping your horn, even if you feel like it. You never know who you are dealing with…
